10 Mile Radius - A Theory
Friends used to ask me for advice regarding moving. I had a fair amount of experience in this arena. When my wife and I were younger, moving became a habit. In fact, we moved 3 times over a 3 & 1/2 year period. In December 1998, we settled down in Milwaukee, where we have been for the last 15 years. Our plan was to stay in Milwaukee until I retired and then move some place warm. You know what they say about the best laid schemes of mice and men.My advice was always the same, if you need to move, go for it. Everything will work out because of my 10 mile radius theory. I believe that most everything we do, except work, is done within a 10 mile radius of our home. Think about it. Most of the day to day day activities we participate in are taken care of within that circle. Church, grocery store, dry cleaners, movies, doctors, hardware store, liquor store, restaurants, Best Buy, Costco, Walmart, Redbox, Lowes, Home Depot, Menards etc, are mostly located within 10 or so miles from where we live. Now, please take into account that this applies to urban, suburban, or medium- sized town locations only. I have friends, you know who you are, that this does not apply to. But, they have different benefits that come with a more rural location. Benefits that I am very grateful to have access to.
Regardless, I have found the above to have held true for me and for most people I know.
Back to the best laid schemes...Well, they went awry.
So, it's off to Minneapolis we go. The twin cities, land of Mary Tyler Moore, 10,000 lakes, and Minnesota nice. We begin this middle-age journey as my youngest child finishes high school. After all, one can pay tuition from anywhere. Unencumbered from the burden of worrying about the "school district", we will endeavor to find a new home, 350 miles northwest of our current home.
